What is the PureTech 1.2 engine?

The PureTech 1.2 engine is a petrol innovation developed by Stellantis Group, known for its efficiency and low emissions.

However, it has gained notoriety for recurring problems, especially with the timing belt in an oil bath. This component, designed to minimize wear and improve performance, has proven to be susceptible to premature deterioration, which can lead to failures and breakdowns costing over 9.000€.

  • Fiat: Doblo

Why is the PureTech engine experiencing issues?

The factory defect in the STELLANTIS PureTech 1.2 engine is mainly due to the choice and design of the “wet” timing belt as the transmission system (belt in oil). The technical and design factors contributing to this problem are detailed below:

1. Wet Timing Belt Design

The timing belt of the PureTech 1.2 engine is submerged in the engine oil. This design aims to reduce noise and friction, improving engine efficiency. However, it presents several critical issues:

  • Premature Wear: Constant exposure to oil and high engine temperatures accelerates the wear of the rubber belt. As the belt deteriorates, it releases small rubber particles into the oil.
  • Material Incompatibility: Chemical interactions between the belt rubber, oil additives, or gasoline that sometimes leaks into the crankcase accelerate belt wear and degradation, affecting its integrity and functionality.

2. Oil Contamination

Rubber particles released by the belt contaminate the engine oil, negatively affecting its lubrication and cooling capacity. Oil contamination leads to several issues:

  • Loss of Lubricating Efficiency: Contaminated oil loses its ability to effectively lubricate the engine’s moving parts, increasing friction and wear.
  • Component Obstruction: Particles can clog the oil pump mesh and other lubrication channels, reducing oil flow and causing inadequate lubrication.

3. Impact on Performance and Safety

Oil contamination and premature belt wear affect vehicle safety and various performance aspects:

  • Engine Overheating: Additional friction and inadequate lubrication can cause engine overheating, increasing the risk of catastrophic failures.
  • Braking System Failures: Oil contamination can affect the braking system, stiffening the pedals and compromising vehicle safety.
  • Internal Component Wear: Contaminated oil acts as an abrasive, accelerating the wear of critical components such as valves, piston rings, and the crankshaft.

4. Compliance with Emissions Regulations

The PureTech 1.2 engine was designed to comply with strict European emissions regulations (EURO 6), leading to the adoption of technologies like the wet timing belt to improve efficiency. However, these technical decisions, aimed at meeting emissions regulations and reducing costs, resulted in compromises in engine durability and reliability.

Consequences of PureTech engine failures

Below are the main common faults associated with this engine, based on the testimonies of AFESTEL associates, experts, and the specialized press.

1. Oil Overconsumption and Low Oil Pressure

Oil Overconsumption: The PureTech 1.2 engine tends to consume oil excessively, forcing owners to top it up more frequently than normal.

Low Oil Pressure: Oil contamination with rubber particles from the timing belt can cause a reduction in oil pressure, affecting engine lubrication and potentially resulting in Dashboard warning due to low pressure.

MONTHLY COST: €150

2. Timing Belt Degradation

The “wet” timing belt wears prematurely due to constant exposure to gasoline leaks and high engine temperatures. This can result in premature belt wear, release of rubber particles into the engine oil, and subsequent engine blockage or belt breakage which could lead to complete engine failure.

REPAIR COST: 1.500 € – 7.500 €

3. Issues with Oil Pump and Vacuum Pump

Rubber particles released by the belt can clog the oil pump and vacuum pump, leading to reduced oil flow and vacuum pump efficiency on one hand, and lubrication failures on the other hand, potentially causing engine damage.

The vacuum pump can be damaged due to belt material abrasion and as a result, braking assistance may be reduced or lost, increasing the risk of an accident.

This risk has been documented in various European Union countries as reported in these two EU Alerts: Safety Gate EU Citroën and DS, Safety Gate EU Peugeot

COST: 1.500 € – 4.500 €

4. Metallic Noise and Auto-Ignition

A metallic noise in the engine caused by internal wear and increased friction, as well as uncontrolled ignition of the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber, can result in vibrations, abnormal noises, and potential damage to pistons and cylinders.

REPAIR COST: 2.000 € – 4.500 €

5. Poor Valve Sealing and Segment Defect

Faulty valves allow air and oil leaks, affecting engine performance. On the other hand, segment defects cause issues in piston rings affecting compression and allowing oil entry into the combustion chamber leading to smoke, pollution, and fire risk.

REPAIR COST: 1.500 € – 4.000 €

6. Power Loss and Jerking During Driving

Reduced engine performance due to the aforementioned problems affects car acceleration and overall efficiency.

Some AFESTEL associates have reported jerking during driving especially at low speeds or when changing gears.

COST: 700 € – 1.400 €

7. Brake Pedal Stiffening

Oil contamination can affect the braking system, stiffening the pedal and compromising vehicle safety.

COST: 1.200 € – 3.000 €

8. Engine Failure

The accumulation of problems can culminate in total engine breakdown, with repair costs potentially exceeding the vehicle’s value.

COST: 4.000 € – 9.000 €

9. Premature Wear of Various Engine Components

Contaminated oil acts as an abrasive, accelerating the wear of critical engine components, such as valves, piston rings, and the crankshaft.

COST: 1.200 € – 3.000 €
