The shadow of controversy continues to hang over the 1.2 PureTech engine from the Stellantis group, present in a wide range of vehicles such as Opel, Peugeot and Citroën. The YouTube channel “Actualidad Motor – Pruebas de coches” has released an essential video that not only explains the root of the problem, but also guides owners to identify if their car is hiding this “time bomb” and details the actions taken by Stellantis.
The controversy centers on the oil-immersed timing belt. This design, designed to optimize friction, is proving to be its Achilles heel. Interaction with the oil, especially in cold starts, and the presence of fuel as a solvent, accelerate its degradation. The consequences are dramatic: the belt disintegrates prematurely, its particles clog the lubrication system and cause a critical drop in oil pressure, which can culminate in total engine failure.
How do you know if your car is one of those affected?
The video provides a visual cue for owners:
- Engines with oil-immersed belts (the problematic ones): When lifting the hood and looking at the engine from the front, the oil filler cap is located in the lower left corner. If you can see the belt when you remove it, your engine uses this system.
- Engines with timing chain (without this problem): The plastic motor cover has a different shape. The oil filler cap is also on the left, but more towards the middle. When it is removed, you will not be able to see the strap.
It is crucial to know that the new ECO-labeled hybrid models always incorporate a timing chain. In addition, some non-electrified versions, such as the 136 hp 1.2 engine of the Opel Mokka and the 100 hp Citroën C3 and C3 Aircross, already use a chain.
Stellantis’ answer: Enough?
Faced with an avalanche of complaints and problems, Stellantis has reacted with several measures:
- The oil-immersed belt replacement periods have been shortened to 6 years or 100,000 km.
- The warranty for the affected PureTech engines has been extended to 10 years or 175,000 km, provided that maintenance has been carried out in official workshops and following the manufacturer’s instructions.
- The company claims to be seeking solutions for those customers whose engines have already suffered the fatal failure.
If you own a vehicle with a 1.2 PureTech engine, we urge you to watch the complete video to dispel doubts and take the necessary precautions. Information is your best tool to protect your investment and your security.
