Renowned mechanic Ángel Gaitán has published a devastating video about the “PureTech” engine of the Stellantis group (formerly PSA), which he refers to as “Pudretech” due to its multiple problems. On this occasion, Gaitán examines a Peugeot 3008 GT Line that has passed through his workshop on several occasions due to this fault.
The video reveals a recurring and devastating problem: the timing belt, designed to run submerged in oil, degrades prematurely due to gasoline mixing with engine oil. This gasoline leaks into the oil due to a peculiar design of the piston rings, designed to reduce consumption, but with this catastrophic side effect.
A problem that goes beyond the belt
Gaitan explains that the main problem is not the belt breakage itself, but that fragments of the deteriorated belt clog the “chupona” (the oil filter). This blockage prevents the oil from properly lubricating the upper parts of the engine, which can lead to a serious failure and seizure of the engine. Most alarming is that the car’s system does not always detect this low oil pressure, so no warning light comes on.
In the video, Gaitan performs a live demonstration, removing the oil pan to show the “sucker” clogged with belt fragments, even after it had been cleaned in a previous overhaul. He also points out that the crankcase design prevents all used oil from draining completely during an oil change, which exacerbates the problem.
The solution? For Gaitan, there is only one: sue Stellantis.
Given the seriousness and recurrence of the problem, Angel Gaitan is forceful: he advises the owners of these vehicles to sue Stellantis (formerly PSA group) and demand the replacement of the engine until they are provided with a reliable one. Furthermore, it strongly discourages the purchase of these cars, even second-hand, due to the costly and persistent problems they present.
This video is a warning to owners of PureTech-powered vehicles and a strong indictment of Stellantis for a design flaw that is causing serious harm to thousands of drivers.
